A classic breakfast from Maharashtra poha (rice flakes) are a staple from houses to small carts that sell them on street corners. A healthy and light breakfast to get you going... Enjoy!


sunflower oil- 2 tbsp
potatoes cut into small cubes- 1 each
mustard seeds- 1 tsp
cumin seeds- 1 tsp
green chilli chopped- 1 each
curry leaves- 5-6 leaves
onion cut into small cubes- 1 each
turmeric- 1 tsp
poha thick (rice flakes)- 100g
salt- to taste
coriander leaves chopped- 1 tbsp
coriander sprigs and roasted peanuts- garnish


1. Soak the poha in water for 10 minutes, rinse and strain.
2. In a pan heat sunflower oil and cook the potato cubes till golden and set aside in a tray layered with paper towel and sprinkle some salt.
3. In the same pan crackle black mustard seeds, cumin, curry leaves and add the turmeric powder and a teaspoon of water to prevent the turmeric from burning.
4. Add the chopped onion and sauté till translucent 1-2 minutes. Continue adding the poha and mix well.
5. Cook for two minutes stirring continuously. Season with salt.
6. Garnish poha with fresh coriander sprigs, and roasted peanuts.
